Renewing your residence permit: what to know

A residence permit must be renewed before it expires in order to keep your status in Italy regular. The documentation required varies according to the grounds for your stay (employment, self-employment, family, study) but generally includes your current permit, your passport or travel document, and evidence that the grounds for your stay still apply (employment contract, payslips, enrolment on a course of study, and so on). The renewal application is submitted using the kit available at participating post offices. After it is sent, an appointment is scheduled at the Questura for fingerprinting and, later, for collecting your new residence document. It is advisable to start the renewal well before the expiry date, because waiting times for a Questura appointment vary considerably from one area to another.
